Found a lovely A.P. etching by Valerie Thornton which when I unframed I found it to be professionally mounted on heavy weight cardboard, just my luck!

    100%

I know, a shop glued mine to cardboard. Their insurance paid off the full value of the etching.

i agree with Rod O, if you have something valuable, dont attach it permenently to any backer, have it professionally mounted. if you have a print of something, usually most prints are only WORTH a few dollars. I can get wholesale prints of almost anything on fairly good quality paper for 5 to 10 dollars through a wholesaler. now if you have a limited edition print of a current artist, i get those for 20 to 40 dollars. if you have an old lithograph or print from pre 1950 in perfect shape, it depends on the piece. if you do mount it, DO NOT MOUNT IT PERMANENTLY. mount it in such a way that it protects the piece from acid, uv rays and condensation, and you will see the piece go up in value.

if the artwork you have is already mounted unprofessionally, then it depends on how rare and how desirable the peice is. its definitly going to lose some value. without seeing it, there isnt no way to know how much.
