What is the difference, visually, (assuming they will be framed) between “art prints” and “posters”

This is for an apartment I share with my girlfriend, we are planning on buying some art to put on the walls and were wondering if framing posters is:
1) too tacky.
2) will look like it belongs in a dorm room as opposed to an apartment.

Depends on what type of prints. Prints can be very expensive, if made from an original piece in limited quantity. Posters are less expensive, and generally the quality isn’t near the same as a print. They sometimes also have the title of the piece, and the artist name, in a border around the poster. Visually, unless your friends are art students or teachers, they probably won’t even notice the difference. Don’t invest in an expensive piece just to fill a wall. Buy it only if you love it, and will for a long time. Buy posters to fill space.
Art prints are signed, limited edition prints on quality paper.
Posters are mass produced, unsigned, and on a thinner grade of paper.
I have a number of framed posters and art prints in my home, and believe me, they look anything BUT tacky and dorm room-ish. The secret is to choose a frame that complements one of the colors in the print. The vintage prints look wonderful with a narrow wood frame and the more modern ones look great with painted metal frames.
Avoid buying those “prefab poster frames” and visit a frame shop instead. You can order custom colors and assemble the frames yourself to save $$$.
